SC Freiburg Reaches Historic DFB Pokal Final
German Club Makes History with First Appearance
Freiburg Stuns Hamburg 3-1 in Semi-Final
Freiburg, Germany — SC Freiburg has made club history by reaching the final of the DFB Pokal for the first time. The German professional football club defeated Hamburger SV 3-1 in the semi-final on Wednesday, sealing its place in the prestigious cup competition's showpiece event.
Freiburg had never previously advanced beyond the quarter-finals of the DFB Pokal, but they displayed impressive form throughout this year's tournament. Their victory over Bundesliga side Hamburg was particularly impressive, as they battled back from a goal down to secure a remarkable win.
Vincenzo Grifo scored a stunning free-kick to level the scores for Freiburg in the first half, before Lucas Höler and Roland Sallai netted in the second period to complete the comeback. Hamburg's consolation goal came from Filip Kostic.
The victory marks a significant moment for Freiburg, who are currently 10th in the Bundesliga standings. It is the club's first major trophy appearance since they won the 2. Bundesliga title in 2016.
Freiburg will now face RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal final on May 21st in Berlin. Leipzig booked their place in the final by beating Werder Bremen 2-1 in the other semi-final.
