2024 Presidential Election Predictions Electoral College

270 Electoral Votes Needed to Win

What is the Electoral College?

The Electoral College is a group of 538 electors who are chosen to represent the states in the United States presidential election. Each state has a number of electors equal to its number of senators and representatives in the U.S. Congress. To win the presidency, a candidate must receive a majority of the electoral votes (at least 270).

How are electors chosen?

The state legislatures determine how electors are chosen. In most states, the electors are chosen by the voters on Election Day. However, some states allow the state legislature to appoint the electors, or they hold a separate election for electors.

When do electors meet?

The electors meet in their respective states on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December. They cast their votes for president and vice president, and the results are sent to the U.S. Congress.

What happens if no candidate receives a majority of the electoral votes?

If no candidate receives a majority of the electoral votes, the House of Representatives chooses the president from among the top three candidates. The Senate chooses the vice president from among the top two candidates.

Recent Elections

In the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden received 306 electoral votes to Donald Trump's 232. In 2016, Trump received 304 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton's 227.
