Modi's BJP-led Alliance Leading in Indian Election

NEW DELHI (AP) — Prime Minister Narendra Modi's coalition was leading in a majority of seats Tuesday in India's general election, according to early results, as the Hindu nationalist leader seeks a second five-year term.
Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, and its allies led in 303 seats, according to the Election Commission. The main opposition Congress party and its allies were ahead in 87 seats. A party or alliance needs 272 seats to win a majority in the 543-member lower house of Parliament.
The results are a setback for Congress, which has been out of power for the past five years. The party had hoped to capitalize on growing discontent with Modi's economic policies, but it failed to gain much traction during the campaign.
If Modi wins, he will be the first prime minister to win two consecutive terms since the 1970s. He will also be the first non-Congress prime minister to win a second term.
